Summary
Organizational safety deals with all aspects of health and safety in the workplace and has a strong focus on primary prevention of hazards. Its goal is to prevent accidents and harm to nurses from work-related activities. Organizational safety has become one of the main priorities for organizations across the world. Organizational safety has a significant impact on nurses’ work enjoyment, as it lead to fewer accidents, which results in better nurses retention and improve job enjoyment (Ajmal et al ., 2022).
Health and wellbeing of nurses in the workplace are important issues that should continue to receive attention in any organization. Work related hazard when combined with daily life stress lead to decrease nurses’ satisfaction and enjoyment due to excess physical and mental load on the human body and mind. The health of nurses is a prime concern for any organization as nurses are the direct caregivers to the patient and their emotional and physical stability is needed for effective patient care for maintaining their standards in relation to patient safety.
This study aimed to assess organizational safety and its relation to nurses’ job enjoyment.
Study design:
A descriptive correlational research design was used.
Setting:
The study was conducted in all in patient medical and surgical units at Benha University Hospital.
Subjects:
Simple random sample of nurses (320) who are working in the above-mentioned study setting had been used according to sample size formula.
Tools of data collection: Two tools were used for data collection.
Tool I:- Organizational Safety Questionnaire:- Structure questionnaire was developed by Sarsangi et al., (2015) and E.Zarei et al.,(2016), and modified by the investigator to assess levels of organizational safety. It consisted of two parts;
Part (1): Personal characteristics of nurses, including (age, sex, marital status educational qualification, years of experience, and training courses about organizational safety).
Part (2): Organizational safety items: It consisted of 37 items divided into 6 domains. attitude of staff nurse (6) items, relationship among staff nurses and supervisors ( 7) items, reporting of errors (10 ) items, communication with physicians ( 5 ) items, accumulative fatigue (4) items and Staff nurses training ( 5 ) items.
Tool II: Nurses Job Enjoyment Scale:-
It was adopted by Siqueira, (1995) to assess nurses’ job enjoyment to assess nurses’ job enjoyment. It consisted of (29) items divided into five domains; pleasure (3 items), supportive relation with others (10 items), workplace conditions (7 items), feeling of competence (6 items) and challenge/ improvement of performance (3items).
The study has generated the following findings:
- Less than two thirds (63.7) of nurses had high perception level toward organizational safety.
- More than two thirds (67.4%) of the studied nurses had a high level of job enjoyment.
- There was highly positive correlation between organizational safety and job enjoyment.
- There was highly statistical significant relation between organizational safety and nurses’ age, sex, educational qualification, and years of experience.
- There was highly statistical significant relation between total job enjoyment and nurses’ age and sex. While there was statistical significant relation between total job enjoyment and educational qualification and years of experience.
According to the findings of the present study, it is recommended that:
 For Organizational Administration:
• Developing policies and procedure that positively influence organizational safety and thus improve nurses’ job enjoyment.
• Supporting nurses by providing rewards for an innovative job, job flexibility as well as opportunities for participating in decision making and problem solving, which give them feeling of enjoyment.
 At educational level
• Conduct conferences and workshops for all nurses to improve their skills and knowledge about safety measures.
• Developing creative nursing program for career development especially of old diploma nurses.
For further research:-
• Replication of the study on a larger probability sample is highly recommended to achieve generalizable results.
• Further research to assess the effect of organizational safety on nurses’ enjoyment.
