Abstract

Wadi El-Raiyan Lakes (28” 15’ and 29” 17’) are located in Wadi El-Raiyan Depression in the deepest part of El-Faiw Governorate in the Western Desert of Egypt, about 130 km south west of Cairo. It consists of 2 Lakes connected by a channel. Their total surface area is about 40,000 feddans (1 Fed. = 4200 mz). The project of Wadi El-Raiyan began in October 1968 and impoundment began in 1973. The project consists of a canal (9.5 km long) leading from El-Wadi agricultural Drain in El-Faiyiim Governorate right to its desert boundary where it discharges into the first Lake of Wadi El-Raiyan via a tunnel (9 Km long, 3 m 4). The Lakes receive 200 million m3 agricultural drainage water per year from the agricultural lands of El-Faiflm Governorate in order to solve the problem of rising water level in Lake Qariin. A hyper-arid region has thus been changed into 2 man-made Lakes with the original natural habitat in both depressions submerged under water. The net result was a series of changes in the existing ecosystem. As far as the writer is aware, the bacterial flora per se in the bottom-sediment of this newly established habitat has not been studied yet. The present research work was intended to investigate certain aspects of the bacteriological and some physico-chemical characteristics of the bottom-sediment and the water immediately above the bottom-sediment in Wadi El-Raiyan Lake.
