Abstract

The ERAS pathways were introduced in the early 21st century and have shown positive results over the past two decades. They have proven effective in reducing perioperative mortality and morbidity rates, shortening hospital stays, minimizing complications, and improving recovery after major surgeries. It has been studied and adopted in various medical specialties, encompassing colorectal, thoracic, cardiac, urological, spinal, neurosurgical, vascular, orthopedic, pancreatic, gynecological, and breast surgeries. ERAS is a systematic strategy that provides standardized evidencebased treatment components to patients undergoing specific types of surgeries. ERAS protocols consist of preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative elements, with a primary emphasis on preoperative counseling, avoiding extended fasting, optimizing fluid management, reducing the use of tubes, utilizing opioid-sparing pain management, and promoting early mobilization. The aim of the work: The aim of the work was to compare enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) to conventional care following surgical laparotomy regarding the impacts on hospital stay, postoperative complications, rate of readmission and reoperations. Patients and methods: This was a prospective study that was carried on 146 patients presented with abdominal pathology requiring surgical laparotomy urgent or elective attended to gastro intestinal surgery unit, general surgery department at Tanta University Hospitals during the period from July 2022 to July 2023.
