Abstract

1- Tarragon uses a spice for mayonnaise, sauces, salads, fish, chicken and meat products, and flavoring.
2- Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus L) extract could be used to supplement some fruits juices. It has benefits nutritional value.
3- Using Tarragon in pharmaceutical industry has benefits medicinal such as; hepatoprotective activity. It has contains antioxidants.
4- Nutritional education programs through media sources are very important for public
5- Encourage cultivation of tarragon in many parts in Egypt.
6- Further researches are needed of tarragon herbs and other diseases.
Summary
The present study was applied in Food Technology Research Institute Agricultural Research Center, Giza- Egypt to invistagate the effect of tarragon dried leaves and its ethanolic extracts (80%) at different concentrations on chronic liver disease. Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus L.) leaves was purchased from Herbs &Spices Company (Obour City El-kalubia, Egypt). It was washed, dried in oven under vacuum, ground , dipping in ethanol 80% (1:100 w/v) in dark bottle for 48h in refrigerator at 4˚C temperature. The extracts, then mixtures were filtered by filter paper (Whatman1). Ethanolic solutions were evaporated in rotary evaporator at 50˚C. Sixty Adult male of Albino rats wheighted (180±20g) were used and divided (10) groups sub groups (6 rats each), all groups fed 2 months:
-G1: Fed on basal diet only (Control Negative).
G2: induced CCl4 Fed on basal diet (Control Postive).
-G3: Fed on basal diet+1% dried tarragon powder/daily.
-G4: induced CCl4 fed on basal diet+1% dried tarragon powder/daily.
-G5: Fed on basal diet+ 2% Tarragon powder/daily.
-G6: induced CCl4 Fed on basal diet+2% dried Tarragon powder/daily.
-G7: Fed on basal diet+ Tarragon extracts (100mg/ Kg b.w. /day) orally.
-G8: induced CCl4 Fed on basal diet+Tarragon extract (100mg/ Kg b.w. /day) orally.
-G9: Fed on basal diet+ Tarragon extract (200mg/ Kg b.w. /day) orally.
-G10: induced CCl4 Fed on basal diet+Tarragon extract (200mg/ Kg b.w. /day) orally.
At the end of the experimental period, rats were fasted, anesthetized and serum were taken for biochemical parameters. Statistical analysis and Sensory evaluation of pomegranate juice fortified with dried tarragon powder (1% or 2%) and tarragon extracts (100 or 200mg/L.) All data were statistically analyzed.
The results showed that:
- Chemical composition of dried tarragon contained protein, carbohydrate, Fat, and Ash were (25.38, 59.42, 7.85 and 7.62) g/100g respectively. Also, Total Phenols, Flavonoids, Carotenoids and Volatile oil were (28.5, 15.54, 9.98 and 0.30) mg/g, respectively.
- The mean of BWG and FER given tarragon extracts (100 or 200mg/kg) resulted in a significant increase (p˂0.05) in BWG and FER for treated chronic liver disease groups (G10, G8) (68.40 and 65.75g, respectivley) groups G8 and G10 (1.76 % and 1.67%) respectivley in compered to chronic liver disease G2.
- Serum Cholesterol in chronic liver diseases rats (G6, G8 and G10) was significantly decresed (78.67, 77.00, and76.67) mg/dl respectively. While total lipid of G6 and G10were decreased to recorded the values (69.00 and 61.67) mg/dl respectively.
- -Resultes proved that effect of tarragon powder (1% or 2%) and tarragon extracts (100 or 200mg) on Triglycerides in groups chronic liver disease (G4,G6,G8, and G10)were decreased significant compered to G2.
- -Also, the results showed significant reduction in LDL and vLDL in chronc liver disease groups (G8 and G10) supplemented with tarragon extracts (100 or200mg/kg) .Alternatively, the mean value of HDL in chronic liver disease groups G6, G8 and G10 has markedly significantly increased (p˂0.05) supplemented with tarragon powder (2%), tarragon extracts (100 or200mg/kg) compered to G2 fed on basal diet only.
- Kidney functions, serum urea nitrogen decreased among Supplemented with Tarragon powder (1% or 2%) Tarragon extracts (100mg) in groups G4, G6, and G8 (30.67, 31.67 and 25.33mg/dl), While in Creatinine is significantly decreased in G6 (0.55mg/dl) supplemented with tarragon powder 2% when compared with group (G2).
- Liver functions were improved in chronic liver disease groups supplemented with tarragon powder 2% tarragon extracts (100 or 200mg) in G8, and G10 induced a markedly significant reduction (p < 0.05) of the enzymes ALT (36 and 34.33) IU/L, AST (2.63 and 2.60) IU/L, ALP (1.88, and 1.86) IU/L respectively, compared to G2.
- Histopathological of liver: Liver from induced CCl4 +100mg tarragon extract (G 8) revealed cytoplasmic vacuolization of hepatocytes and fibroplasia in the portal triad. In contrary, sections from normal 200mg Tarragon extract& induced CCl4 group 200mg Tarragon extract (G9&G10) revealed no histopathological changes.
- Sensory evaluation of pomegranate juice fortified with dried tarragon powder (1% or 2%) or tarragon extracts (100 or 200mg juice) these results cleared that slightly decrease but not significant at (P<0.05) difference in parameters (odor, color, taste, texture and appearance) till final of storge period (9days).

Conclusion:
The present study cleared that Tarragon Extracts or Tarragon Powder were more effective in normal groups and chronic liver disease groups in rats.besides improved all biological parameters (CHOL, TG, Liver functions, and Kidnyes function) may be due to phytochemical contents in Tarragon as Polyphenols, Flavonoids and Corotenoids contents. More researches are required to test impacts.
