Abstract

Rabies virus infection among wild and domestic animals constitutes a well-known problem in Egypt with more than 200000 animal bites recorded annually mostly from dogs. Average 60 people die annually from rabies in Egypt (According to WHO/ Egypt in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Population). The objective of this work is to isolate and characterize the most prevalent Rabies virus circulating in reservoir species, and to compare it with the previous isolates and to check for any molecular divergence throughout the whole genome. We investigated the prevalence and molecular characterization of rabies virus (RABV) from different animals in Egypt. The study elucidated some key structural features of the AF4 lineage dominant in Egypt and supported the recent proposal that at least two sub-lineages of RABV are circulating in Egypt.
