Abstract

Insecticidal activity of the different extracts from Salsola kali L and Catharanthus roseus L against Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) was studied, the chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts from S. kali, as well as the alkaloid and butanol extracts from C.roseus, exhibited the highest insecticidal activity on the 2nd instar larva of s. littoralis, with LC50 values of 150.11, 1661.82, 234.58 and 481.09 ppm, respectively. Toxicological effect guided isolation and elucidation of the most toxic fraction and yielded twelve compounds, comprising of two shikimates (protocatechuic acid and syringic acid), three flavonoids (5,3’-dihydroxy-2’- methoxy-6,7-methylendloxy lsofavone, isorhamnetin 3-O-ß-D-glucoside and astragalin), four terpenoids (loliolide, 7-epi-loliolide, secologanol and sweroside), one chromone (6,7-dimethoxy-4H-chromen-4-one), one coumarin (xanthotoxol) and one alkaloid (alstonine) from S. kali L, as well as three monoterpenoid indole alkaloids, vindoline, vindorosin and ajmalicine from C.roseus, using extensive chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. The biochemical activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), acetylcolinesterase (AchE), chitinase, enzymes was examined. The biological evaluation on the resulted new 2nd larval instar of s. littoralis showed high significant differences between chloroform, ethyl acetate, alkaloid and butanol extracts treatments and the control at LC25 value in some biological aspects. The larval and pupal duration was significantly prolonged, also pupal weight decreased for both treatments when compared to the control. The rate of adult emergence, female fecundity, percentage of hatchability of deposited eggs and adult longevity were significantly affected.
