Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is considered the sixth most common malignant neoplasm worldwide and the fourth one in Egypt and the third most lethal cancer worldwide. It is ranked as the fifth most common malignancy in men and the ninth in women.
Unfortunately, HCC incidence and mortality rates worldwide have been boosted over the previous two decades and are still increasing. This could be explained by the rise in the prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV). Hepatitis B and C infections are the dominant HCC risk factors in addition to aflatoxin, obesity, alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases.
An integration between serum AFP and abdominal US is the base for HCC screening in patients with liver cirrhosis, however AFP is a low sensitivity test and US is an operator dependent procedure. So, there is an urgent necessity to discover new biomarkers that are highly efficient in early detection of HCC. This study aims at evaluating circulating levels of mitochondrial DNA copy number (MTCN), microRNA-210 (MiRNA-210) and vitamin K2 (VK2) in Egyptian patients with HCC.
