Abstract

The present study aims at identifying the features of persuasive language that the top critics used in writing their reviews on Incredibles 2. The reviews are analyzed through the frame work of Aristotle’s Persuasion Theory (PT) and within Perloff’s (2003) definition of persuasion. A qualitative methodology is applied to analyze the reviews of the six top critics of the movie on Rotten Tomatoes. This analysis shows the persuasive techniques that reviewers used; these techniques are compiled, by the researcher, from Argyropoulou and Ypsilantis (2017), Halmari and Virtanen (2005), and Moore (2006); moreover, the analysis displays the commonly used evaluative parameters of Bednarik’s Evaluation Theory (ET) (2006); this is in addition to demonstrating the critical metaphor principles of charteris Black’s Critical Metaphor Analysis Theory (CMAT) (2004). The results indicate that ‘Adjectives’ are the most commonly employed persuasive technique. They also present ‘Emotivity’ as the most prominently used evaluative parameter. In addition, ‘Personification’ is the most highly recognized conceptual metaphor principle. Finally, the six reviewers have proved to relate to Aristotle’s classical rhetoric concepts: ethos, logos and pathos. Thus, the present study managed to incorporate multiple techniques and theories of application that are meant to benefit those working within the domain of movie production marketing and film publicity professionals.
