Abstract

Background: Impaired subclinical left atrial function may contribute to the risk of cardiovascular disease in obesity.
Aim and objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of obesity on LA strain in patients with structurally normal heart and normal left ventricular ejection fraction.
Subjects and methods: This prospective observational case control study was conducted on one hundred subjects presenting to El Demerdash hospital echocardiography unit electively for transthoracic echocardiography; 100 Subjects were categorized; We divided them into two groups; 50 non obese subjects (controls) with BMI < 30 kg/m2 and 50 obese subjects (cases) with BMI > 30 kg/m2.
Results: On assessing left atrial measurements and functions, max and min LA volume by Biplane method by S-T, indexed volumes and LA EF by Biplane method showed no significant difference between non-obese group and obese group (p>0.05). Moreover, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups as regards S-R, S-CD and S- CT (p>0.05).
Conclusion: Obesity has no effect on the LA reservoir, contractile, or conduct strain by 2D speckle-tracking. Moreover, among different variables studied, aging was the most important factor significantly impairing the LA strain by speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE).
