Abstract

The current study was carried out on the soil and water resources in Sahl El-Tina at Port Sa’eed valley in the northeast of Egypt. It aimed to pinpoint the most prominent changes in some physical and chemical properties of soil and water resources across the study area. Also it aimed to figure out the degree of pollution with heavy metals, especially nickel. Regression and correlation coefficient were the major statistical tools. In addition, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was also recruited, when appropriate. The soil textural class was clay. Soil pH threatens with sodicity problems. ESP threatens with alkalinity. OC and OM were generally low and not fit for organic agriculture. CEC was good enough for nutrient exchange with soil solution and plant roots. The irrigation water was good enough for irrigation and leaching of salts from the soil profile of some spots. The open-ditch drainage system was efficient enough for aerating some spots of the study area. The content of soil profile of essential heavy metals can be figured out as follows: Al > Fe > Mn > Zn > Ni > Cu > Ba < Mo. The content of soil profile of non-essential heavy metals can be figured out as follows: Si > Sr > V > Cr > Pb < Co > Cd. Ni distribution among the different phases of soil exchange can be arranged as follows: Water soluble < exchangeable < carbonate bound < Fe-Mn oxides bound < organically bound < residual. Well decomposed organic manures are the key solution to enhance soil tolerability to pollution with heavy metals.
Plants uptake of macronutrient, micronutrients, and heavy metals from the soil ecological system can be maneuvered to get rid of some undesired elements out of the soil profile. As a result of soil contamination, much care should be taken when using plant products as food to humans or as feed to animals. Big animals; ruminants, are the only to try feeding them on such stuff.
