Abstract

Over several years, many research types were done on the photovoltaic panel’s lack of performance due to rising operating temperatures. This paper aims to analyze and report a numerical simulation of photovoltaic cooling techniques using passive and active cooling systems. Meanwhile, improving the photovoltaic panel’s thermal management, electrical power generation, and overall system performance. This research investigates the use of phase-change materials (PCM) and Thermoelectric Generator (TEG) to maintain the photovoltaic panel temperature close to the ambient. The study is a combinational simulation of a hybrid cooling system situated in photovoltaic panels’ back using transient CFD modeling of heat transfers. The developed model depending on the active cooling model and hybrid passive and active cooling model. The study aims to confirm the effect of TEG additions, PCM module design on the back of photovoltaic panels under variance of irradiation flux in both fair and sunny weather conditions. Results indicated that the passive cooling system increases photovoltaic panels’ power generation by 20% when reducing the PV panel working temperature by 20 °C. Active cooling systems raising the total produced power and boosting the overall thermal performance by 12 %. Finally, a combination of passive and active cooling systems increases overall system performance by 30% due to reducing the PV panel’s temperature and enhancing overall system efficiency.
