Abstract

The present study investigated the code-switching (CS) practices of five Egyptian university students, in the two modes of computer-mediated communication (CMC). The results showed that the students used the three types of CS (intra-sentential CS, inter-sentential CS and tag-switching) in the synchronous mode. On the other hand, only intra-sentential CS and inter-sentential CS were used in the asynchronous mode. Moreover, the study investigated the students’ reasons for CS. Adopting the two theoretical frameworks of Gumperz (1982) and Appel and Muysken (2006), it was found that the “referential” function proposed by Appel and Muysken and the “reiteration” and “message qualification” reasons suggested by Gumperz were the most used reasons for CS by the students. Finally, the students’ attitudes towards CS, in both modes, were observed. The majority of the students had positive results towards CS and mentioned that it was a helpful tool in making them acquire new vocabulary.
