Abstract

One of the factors that can affect a building’s sustainability is its construction materials. An effective material selection can assist reduce a building’s embodied energy, carbon dioxide emissions to the environment, energy use in the materials manufacturing process, and overall environmental and economic impacts.
GPRS (the second edition) was applied in this study in order to reduce the negative environmental impact of using construction materials. Hence, this study proposes a method for assessing the materials’ credits which is if a material complies with the materials and resources criteria. This developed approach could be used to evaluate the environmental dimension of sustainability in different housing projects’ building materials. It also aids in the selection of the SBM, either alone or in combination with other objectives such as LCC.
This thesis presented a framework to create a decision-making model that helps practioners select SBM for housing projects in Egypt. These materials can be traditional or green materials. This model considers both environmental and economic aspects of sustainability through the assessment of the materials by applying the materials and resources GPRS criteria and their LCC. multi-criteria optimization (MCO) and compromise solution are used to determine the optimum solutions by focusing on ranking and selecting the best option from a set of competing options, as well as suggesting a compromise solution (one or more).
A desktop-friendly using application is created by following the developed framework to help the decision-makers in their choice of SBM. Through presenting three scenarios,as follows: (1) the lowest budget combination of the building materials, (2) the highest GPRS credits combination of the building materials, and (3) according to the decision-maker priority for the LCC or GPRS credits.
6.2 Research Conclusion
1. Selecting building materials should be based on the 3 pillars of sustainability so the this study focused on environmental, economic and social dimension.
2. International and local studies used LEED rating system in selecting the materials. While, this study used GPRS rating system as a tool to assess the building materials environmentally.
A decision-making model is created through a framework using VIKOR technique with two objective functions. (i) the material’s life cycle cost, and (ii) credits earned by the material through the modified method for assessing the building materials in GPRS proposed. This model helped in :
3. saving up to 60% of the building LCC, and add 50% of the modified GPRS credits.
4. It is flexible tool for the decision makers to find the best alternative in the various work packages, in different housing projects in Egypt.
5. Creating desktop application to facilitate the selecting the optimum sustainable building materials.
6. This application has an initial baseline database for information on all aspects of the local and sustainable building materials.
6.3 Research Limitations
1) This research has studied three types of Egyptain housing building projects (Distinct, Middle-income, and social housing)
2) Ten workpackages in the buildings have been studied.
3) Inflation and interest rates and intial costs that have been taken into consideration at year 2020.
4) Lifespan of the building is 70 years for this research.
6.4 Recommendations & Future works
1) More paraeters could be considered through thesis framework, such as embodied energy and materials’ quality. In addition to LCC and GPRS modified materials’ credits.
2) More types of buildings can be studied to be applied to the framework developed by this reseach.
3) All workpackages of the building can be included and verified.
4) Other decision-making models can be applied to find the optimum solution for the developed framework.
5) Insert more green alternative materials that apply the GPRS materials and resourses criteria.
6) Update the application with the rest of the GPRS categories
