Abstract Background: High-frequency ventilation is a form of mechanical ventilation that reduces ventilator-associated lung injury, achieve adequate alveolar ventilation with small tidal volumes, and be used as a rescue therapy for protecting immature lungs. Aim of the study: This study aimed to assess nurses’ performance for care of neonates on high frequency ventilation. Research design: A descriptive research design was used. Setting: This study was conducted at Neonatal Intensive Care Units in Children’s Hospital affiliated to Ain Shams University Hospitals and Children’s Hospital (Sadnawy) affiliated to Zagazig University Hospitals. Subjects: A convenience sample composed of 81 nurses who were working at the neonatal intensive care unit in the previously mentioned settings. Tools: (1) a pre-designed questionnaire format to assess nurses’ knowledge regarding care of neonates on high frequency ventilation. (2) Observational checklist to assess actual nursing practice regarding care of neonates on high frequency ventilation. (3) Attitude rating scale to assess nurses’ attitude for care of neonates on high frequency ventilation. Results: More than one quarter of nurses had good knowledge, more than half of nurses had total incompetent practice and more than half of nurses had positive attitude regarding care of neonates on high frequency ventilation. Conclusion: There is a highly statistically significant positive correlation between total nurses’ knowledge, practice and their attitude. Recommendations: Developing a simplified and comprehensive booklet including guidelines about nursing care of neonates on HVF. |
