Abstract

Recently, many researchers have been interested in designing the buildings to get the benefit from daylight inside, which gives visual and thermal comfort and contributes to reducing cost and saves a lot of energy consumption for artificial lighting.
But a few of them were interested in how to modify the designs of the existing educational spaces that did not receive daylight, which increases the consumption of these spaces for artificial lighting and gives a lack of a sense of visual and thermal comfort, and that is inconsistent with the principles of designing educational spaces that aim to reach the maximum visual comfort for the student, which helps in raising the performance of the student during the educational process.
Therefore, the aim of this thesis is the possibility of improving the natural lighting in the educational spaces in the existing buildings that did not receive enough daylight, using the innovated daylighting techniques to reach the visual comfort which students need. It identifies human comfort specially, visual comfort in educational spaces and the innovative daylighting techniques which are used to reach the daylight to the dark parts in educational spaces. The thesis also examines two innovative daylighting techniques on the educational space and looks into the resulted daylighting strategy in Cairo, Egypt clear sky with a desert climate.
The thesis consists of four parts and ends with conclusions and recommendations for future research. Chapter1, discussing the importance of visual comfort in educational spaces for students and how it affects them. Then Chapter 2, which presenting the types of the innovative daylighting techniques. Chapters 3 which investigates the examples of the daylighting techniques. Finally, Chapter 4 examines the two types of these techniques on an educational space to reach the most level of the visual comfort for the students by using the ClimateStudio software.
