Abstract

Alum Sludge (AS) as a waste product of conventional water treatment plant was collected from Rod El-farag water treatment plant in cairo, Egypt. (AS) was characterized and improved by mixing with acid treated rice husk (RH) by ratio of (2 RH: 1 AS) then the last mixture was calcinated at 700 oC for 2 hrs. The result composite was called (ASRH). (ASRH) composite was beard on prepared and characterized Nano-Magnetite (N.M) by ratio of (1 ASRH: 0.14 N.M) to give the new composite (ASRHNMC) more adsorption characteristics, large surface area and magnetic properties. (AS), (ASRH) and (ASRHNMC) were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, XRF, SEM, EDX, TEM, BET N2 and VCM. The nano-magnetic composite (ASRHNMC) was used as an effective and a cheap adsorbent for adsorption of Methylene Blue (MB) dye, Rhodamie B (RB) dye and Mn metal ion. The efficiency of adsorption of 10 mg/l of MB dye was about 92.5% through 30 minutes, pH=7, stirring speed 100 rpm and the composite concentration was 1 g/L. The efficiency of adsorption of 10 mg/l of RB dye was about 82.5% through 70 minutes, pH=7, stirring speed 100 rpm and the composite concentration was 1 g/L. The efficiency of adsorption of 10 mg/l of Mn metal ion was about 75.7% through 100 minutes, pH=7, stirring speed 100 rpm and the composite concentration was 2 g/L. the study reveals that the composite can be regenerated for use many times by using (70%) ethanol after adsorption process of both dyes and (0.1 M) solution of NaOH after adsorption of Mn metal ion. A simulation was made to test the composite on a laboratory prepared drainage samples which were injected with dyes and manganese to study its application and reality. from the results of the experiments we were completely sure of the results of the experiments the success of the combination in adsorption of the dyes and the manganese element under study. Thus, it can be used in treating industrial wastewater for dyeing and textile factories from these pollutants.
Replacement of these unwanted wastes (Alum Sludge and Rice Husk) into a recycle resources can provide alternatives solution to solve other pollution problems caused by industrial waste dyes and heavy metals.
