Abstract

Dyslexia is the most common LD, accounting for at least 80% of all LDs. It is characterized by problems with accurate or fluent word recognition, poor decoding, and poor spelling abilities, despite adequate intelligence, motivation, and educational opportunities.
Central auditory processing (CAPD) is characterized by poor perception of speech and non-speech sounds. Individuals with APD may present by listening difficulties, difficulty in hearing& understanding speech in noise, difficulties with sound localization, poor attention and/or memory.
The study was conducted in Audiology unit, ENT Department Ain-Shams University on 30 children diagnosed having dyslexia according to Modified Arabic dyslexia screening test (MADST) where scores below the 25th percentile of age matched norms. Norms of learning disability clinic Ain Shams University hospitals was used. Subjects were selected from the phoniatrics unit, ENT department, Ain- Shams University hospitals.
Each child was evaluated by dichotic digit test to confirm dichotic listening deficit. Each child with abnormal dichotic listening deficit received dichotic listening remediation program two sessions /week for 8 week AT least each session last for 30 minutes.
All cases underwent the following:
1. Full history taking.
2. Psychometric evaluation: using Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale fifth edition (SB5) with score of 90 or above.
3. Basic audiological evaluation in the form of:
• Otological examination.
• Immitancemetry: including tympanometry and acoustic reflex thresholds.
• Pure-tone Audiometry.
• Speech Audiometry.
4. CAP Questionnaire of children which included:
• Identification & Localization.
• Sustained & selective attention
• Audio- visual integration.
• Memory.
• Scholastic achievement.
• Language.
• Behavior.
5. Arabic Dichotic Digit test (DDT):
DDT test consisted of (version I&II). Both versions consist of twenty items with two digits and four digits in version I and II respectively. Four additional items were included for practice in each version. It was administered at 50 dB sensation level.
6. Arabic computer-based remediation program:
Training on the dichotic listening ability was done two sessions / week for 8 weeks each session last for 30 minutes at central auditory clinic in El-Demerdash hospital. Dichotic listening remediation consisted of two games.
The present study showed that all the abilities of central auditory processing questionnaire for children were affected and mostly affected abilities were attention, behavior and scholastic-achievement.
The present study showed high comorbidity of dyslexia with central auditory processing disorders (CAPD) (90% of study group had abnormal dichotic listening ability of left ear.
The present study relieved subjective improvement following dichotic listening remediation as showed by central auditory questionnaire results pre& post remediation program in most of abilities (attention, memory and scholastic-achievement). Marked improvement after remediation program relieved by pscho-physical assessment DDT pre& post remediation program.
In the present study no effect of age, gender on the results of DDT or central auditory questionnaire. Also, no significant difference between groups received remediation for 3,2months.
