Abstract

Background: Iron deficiency (ID) is the most common micronutrient deficiency and the most common cause of anemia worldwide .Children in the developing world are especially susceptible to ID primarily because of their rapid growth and their low bioavailable iron diet. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess mothers’ care for their children with iron deficiency anemia. Design: A descriptive design was utilized. Setting: The study was carried out at Nassar pediatrics out-patient clinic affiliated to health insurance organization, Qalubia Governorate. Subjects: A purposive sample of (131) mothers of children at school age. Tool: One tool was used for data collection; interviewing questionnaire consisted of four parts. Part 1: Socio demographic characteristics of mothers and their children, part 2: Medical history and health assessment of the child from the child’s records in Nassar pediatrics out-patient clinic, part 3: Mothers’ knowledge related to care for children with iron deficiency anemia, and part 4: Mothers’ and children’s reported practices related to care for their iron deficiency anemia. Results: It was found that 86.3% of mothers had unsatisfactory knowledge related to iron deficiency anemia and 58.8% of mothers had unhealthy practices related to the care of their children with iron deficiency anemia, 77.1% of children had unhealthy practices of total reported practices. Conclusion: There were highly statistically significant relation between mothers’ personal characteristics and their knowledge, and there were highly statistically significant positive correlation between total knowledge, child reported practices and mothers’ reported practices. Recommendation: Health education program about dietary diversification, enhancement of the bioavailability of micronutrients, increase the production and consumption of iron rich food.
