Abstract
The design studio is the core of arts and architecture education. It has a specific nature that contrasts any classroom or lecture hall as it fosters various activities including reflective practices, individual works, groupworks, active workshops, and galleries. This raises the demand to develop an approach for conceptualizing human behavioral and social encounters taking place within the context of the design studio for informing design and achieving better fit between users and the physical studio settings.
Today, there is an urgent need to supply local designers and practitioners with procedures and practices of acquiring and understanding Human behavior for informing design, thereby guaranteeing a higher quality of life in the built environment. Behavioral and social sciences have used to be the only source of inquiring for and understanding Human behavior. This study proposes an environment behavior research approach for guiding researchers and practicing designers to use environment behavior research for conceptualizing Human and Social behavior within the context of the design studio.
This study discusses the role and the implementation of environment behavior research in architectural design praxis for shaping and reshaping the design studio. This is attained through introducing relevant architectural design approaches that employ environment behavior research, and relevant research methodologies and theoretical perspectives dedicated for acquiring human behavioral information for informing architectural design praxis. An approach is formulated for guiding architects for conceptualizing user-settings transactions taking place within the context of the design studio that is explained thoroughly and applied on a selected design studio from the department of Architectural engineering in Faculty of Engineering in Ain Shams.
