Abstract

The present study provides a description of all investigated poultry farms in details include area, poultry density, ventilation methods, temperature, humidity, gases (ammonia NH3, total volatile organic compounds TVOCs, formaldehyde HCHO), dust (inhalable dust PM10, respirable dust PM2.5) and aerial microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) and assesses the hazard impact on farm workers’ health through some hematological and some preliminary laboratory tests as rapid biochemical markers in blood for early diagnosis. The measurements were carried out in 4 commercially operated poultry farms located in Al-Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt. All investigated poultry farms differentiated in how to be equipped. The air samples were collected during 3 different stages of the rearing period of broiler chicks twice a week, from November 2018 to April 2019. The results of this study showed that inhalable dust varied between 99 - 215 µg/m3 and respirable dust varied from 83 - 195 µg/m3 in farm C and farm D, respectively. the highest mean NH3 conc. of the four poultry farms was 9.4 ppm for Farm (D), followed by Farm (B) was 7.3 ppm. However, the lowest mean NH3 conc. was 3.7 ppm recorded in Farm (C) and Farm (A). The concentration of TVOCs in this study is higher than the recommended TVOCs levels of indoor air quality (IAQ) that is 1 to 3 mg/m3 (high) the highest mean TVOCs conc. of the four poultry farms was 17.00 mg/m3 for Farm (D), followed by Farms (C) and (B) were 5.69 and 3.45 mg/m3, respectively. However, the lowest mean conc. was 1.18 mg/m3 recorded in Farm (A). the mean percentage of total bacterial count during the FP was recorded in the four poultry farms as follow: Poultry Farm (C) 38.4 % > (A) 31.8 % > (B) 16.4 % > (D) 13.5 %. Significant decrease in the serum level of acetylcholinesterase in farm workers, as compared to control result (6140.61 ± 103.91 vs 8375.87 ± 74.80, -26.69 %, respectively). It can be concluded the accumulation of the manure, water and feed remains lead to several pollutants particulate matters which has hazard health effects on farm workers. Therefore, the personal protective equipment as face mask and mask filter must be used, especially during disinfection for reduction of the pollutants exposure.
