Abstract

This study aimed to assess nurses’ performance for prevention of necrotizing entercolitis of preterm infant at neonatal intensive care units. Subjects and Methods: A descriptive study was conducted at the Neonatal Intensive Care affiliated to Ain shams Childrens Hospital and Alfayom University Hospital. Sampling: A convenience sample include all available nurses who are working in the previously mentioned settings, their total number was 45 nurses and all preterm infant admitted in the NICU in the previously mentioned settings ,their total number was 100 preterm infant.Tools: A structured questionnaire sheet to assess nurses’ characteristics and their knowledge regarding prevention of NEC. The second tool was observation checklists to assess nurses’ practice to prevention of NEC. Results: revealed that nearly three quarter of the nurses was aged 20< 30years and more than half of them were technical institute of nursing, less than half of nurses had less than one years of experience in NICU,majority of nurses don’t attending training courses about necrotizing enterocolities and more than three quarter of studied nurses had poor knowledge about necrotizing enterocolitie and majority of nurses incompetent performance regarding to prevention of necrotizing enterocolities in Neonatel Intensive Care Unit. Conclusion: The study concluded that, More than three quarters of studied nurses’ had poor level of knowledge regarding prevention of NEC, while the majority of them had incompetence level of practice regarding prevention of NEC, Also there was relation between the total studied nurses knowledge regarding NEC and their total practice regarding prevention of Necrotizing Enterocolities with statistical significant differences. Recommendations: The study recommended that, implementation of lab training program for nurses regarding prevention of Necrotizing Enterocolities .
