Abstract

Ten insect species (Darkling beetle, Honey bee, Carpenter bee, True
Cricket, Dermestid beetle, Surinam cockroach, Blow fly, Grass hopper,
Dragon fly, Vespid wasp) were collected from different localities for chitin
and chitosan extraction. Their characterizations were achieved by IR, X-ray
and UV, the degree of de-acetylation and molecular weight were calculated.
The study showed that they have antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal)
effect. Chitosan was mixed with pro-drugs and the resulted compound was
characterized by IR, dissolved in DMSO and tested against gram positive
and gram negative pathogenic bacteria showed negative results and against
some fungal strains showed negative results also.
