Problem of the study:
Through the belief that television drama has an influential cultural force in contemporary society that cannot be underestimated, and proceed the fact that the Egyptian society is in urgent need to increase awareness and education about mental illness and to determine the nature of the mental image. Some Arab and international researches and studies have pointed to the high rate of psychiatric patients in recent years.
Which confirms the importance of studying the presented images towards changing the public towards mental illness and mental patients. The researcher recently noticed an increase in the number of dramas that present the image of the psychopath .The researcher also noted the increasing demand to watch these dramas, especially young people, the most important groups in society.
The problem of the current study is crystallized in the study: ”The image of the psychological patient in television series and its relation with formation of his mental image among youth.”
Importance of the study: This study derives its importance from
1) The increasing production and presentation of the Egyptian drama dealing with the personality of the psychopath, which prompted the researcher to pay attention to studying the impact of these works on the Egyptian public (negatively and positively).
2) The importance of studying the ”psychiatric patient” category in the Egyptian society, especially in the context of pressures and difficulties that are increasing and varying day after day, and the individual’s ability to face them varies, in light of the absence and limitations of psychological treatment and its lack of recognition in Arab societies.
3) The results of this study contribute to determining the image of the psychological patient presented in the television series, which helps to identify the pros and cons of this image, to take advantage of the gains it provided and criticize the negatives it contains. This could help the drama makers to reconsider the treatment of the image. The psychiatric patient seeks to develop it through the TV series presented in the interest of the Egyptian society.
Objectives of the study: This study aims to identify the media image presented about the psychiatric patient in television series and its relationship to his mental image among young people, by identifying the following:
1) To monitor the most important positive and negative features of the image of the psychiatric patient presented in the television series.
2) Determine the nature of the problems that the mental patient suffers from, as presented by the television series.
3) Standing on the size and type of viewing (active - inactive) by the youth subject of the study for the television series that dealt with the patient’s psychological image.
4) Measuring the perception of youth - the study sample - of the realism of the content of the television series that dealt with the patient’s psychological image.
5) Monitor the features of the mental image of the psychiatric patient, which was formed by young people through exposure to television series.
6) Monitor the relationship between the image of the psychiatric patient presented in television series and his image formed among young people in light of the demographic variables of the audience (gender - educational level - social and economic level).
Questions of the study:
1) What are the most important positive personality traits of a psychiatric patient, as presented by TV series?
2) What are the most important negative personality traits of a psychiatric patient, as presented by TV series?
3) What are the most important problems that the mental patient suffers from, as presented by the TV series?
4) Ways of exposure to the problems facing the psychiatric patient, as presented by TV series?
5) To what extent are young people exposed to television series that deal with the image of the psychopath?
6) What are the dimensions of active viewing by young people of television series that deal with the image of the psychopath?
7) How convinced are the youth of the realism of the image presented of the psychopath in the television series that dealt with the image of the psychopath?
8) What is the mental image of the psychiatric patient that young people have formed through their exposure to television series that deal with the image of the psychopath?
Study variables: The study seeks to test the relationship between a numbers of variables included in it:
1) The independent variable: It is represented by the media image of the psychiatric patient, as presented by television series.
2) Intermediate variables: represented in
- Demographic variables for the youth, the study sample represented in (gender - educational level - economic and social level).
- Active viewin - Watching Motives
- Realizing the realism of the dramatic content
3) Dependent variable: It is represented in the mental image that the young people - the study sample - formed about the psychiatric patient as a result of their exposure to the television series that dealt with the patient’s psychological image.
Hypotheses of the study:
1) There is a correlation relationship of statistical significance between the rate of intensity of public viewing of Egyptian drama and the mental image they have about the patient.
2) There are statistically significant differences among the respondents in the intensity of their exposure to Egyptian drama according to the demographic variables (type - age - educational level - social level - economic level).
3) There is a statistically significant correlation between the rate of youth watching intensity -the study sample- for television series and the perception of the reality of the image presented by the psychiatric patient.
4) There is a statistically significant correlation relationship between the active viewing of the youth - members of the sample - of the television series that dealt with the patient’s psychological image and the perception of the realism of the image presented about the psychological patient.
Study Type:
This study belongs to the category of descriptive studies through which it is possible to access information about the nature of the psychological patient’s image presented in television series and monitor the dimensions of this image. It also seeks to identify the views and impressions of young people about the image of the psychological patient reflected in the television series. This study used the survey method in the sample, both analytical and field.
The study sample:

A- Sample of the analytical study:
The analytical study was conducted on an intentional sample of television series that dealt with the media image of the psychiatric patient. The sample amounted to (4) television series at a rate of (120) episodes that broadcasted 66 hours, 8 minutes and 26 seconds.
B- The field study sample:
The field study was applied to an intentional sample of (400) single young Egyptians in the age group of (15-30) years who watch TV series that dealt with the image of the psychiatric patient, from the Greater Cairo Region (Cairo - Giza - Qalyubia). And to answer the questionnaire form.
Results:
Results of the study questions:
1) Most of the television series relied on the tragic template, as it came at the forefront of the technical templates used in the television series - the sample of the analytical study - by 75%, and the tragicomedy template came with 25% of the total television series - the study sample -.
2) The social content acquired the television series - the study sample - by (100%) of the total television series - the study sample -.
3) The results showed that the most positive personality traits that the psychiatric patient appeared in the TV series is intelligence, and it came at the forefront of the positive personality traits of the psychiatric patient’s personality, at a rate of (93.33%), followed by the trait of calm and balance came second with a rate of (86.76%).
4)The results showed that the most negative personality traits that the psychiatric patient appeared in TV series were nervousness and emotion. The negative personality traits of the psychiatric patient came to the fore with a percentage of (86.67%), followed by the vanity trait came in second place by (78.33%).
5) Social problems topped the problems that the mental patient suffers from (75%), followed by psychological problems in second place by (66.67%).
6) 91% of the youth - members of the sample - confirmed their acceptance of the psychological patient image presented by television series.
7) 54.25% of the youth - individuals of the sample - indicated that the television series contributed to some extent in changing their mental image of the psychiatric patient, and 23% of the youth - individuals of the sample - fully agree that the television series contributed to changing the image the mentality they have about the psychopath.
8) A percentage (72.25%) of the total youth - the study sample - thinks that the features of the media picture of the psychological patient presented in the television series are neutral, that is, they combine positivity and negativity together.
9) The television series that dealt with the image of the psychopath was at the forefront of the sources that helped young people form an image of the mental patient, at a rate of (57.5%).
Results of the study hypotheses:
- The presence of a statistically significant correlation relationship between youth watching - the study sample - of television series and the mental image that these series reflects on their psychiatric patient.
- It was evident that there were no statistically significant differences between young people in the intensity of their exposure to television series according to demographic variables (gender - educational level - economic and social level).
-The absence of a statistically significant correlation between the rate of youth viewing intensity - the study sample - for the television series that dealt with the patient’s psychological image and the perception of the realism of the image presented by the psychiatric patient.
- The existence of a statistically significant correlation relationship between the respondents’ activity during their viewing of the television series that dealt with the image of the psychiatric patient and their perception of the realism of the image presented about the psychiatric patient that was reflected in these dramas.
