Abstract

The experimental system consists of basin solar still and wick solar still. The experiments were conducted at the Solar Energy Laboratory, Dept. of Agric. Eng., Fac. of Agric., Ain Shams University for two systems during the daylight hours (from 8:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.). With salinity (150000 and 35000 ppm) through 5 months of years 2018 and 2019.
The results showed that:
1- the solar radiation value increase in the morning hours till it reaches the maximum value around noon hour, then radiation value starts to decrease rapidly in period from afternoon to the sunset hours. The ambient temperature increase with increase solar radiation for both conventional and modified solar still.
2- the highest amount of distillate water is (2372 mL) at 1cm with salinity 15000 in April .and the lowest amount of distillate water is (1002 mL) at 4 cm with salinity 35000 ppm in January for basin solar still in 2018.
3- The productivity of water at 1 cm ( January, February , March , April , May) with salinity 15000 ppm are (1696, 2044, 2253, 3168 and 3487mL ) respectively on the other hand the productivity of water with salinity 35000 ppm are (1615, 2009, 2472, 3112 and 3420) respectively at the same months for basin solar still in 2019 while the productivity of water in (January, February , March , April , May) with salinity 15000 ppm are (2860, 3420, 4275, 4812 and 5066 mL) respectively on the other hand the productivity of water with salinity 35000 ppm are 2844, 3380, 4235, 4742 and 5004 mL) respectively at the same months and year for wick solar still.
4- The maximum values of basin and wick systems are (3487 and 5006) respectively at salinity 15000 ppm and the minimum values of basin and wick systems are (1696 and 2860) at salinity 35000 ppm respectively.
from the obtained results, it can be observed that the use of wick solar still which gave higher water productivity and lower payback period ( days) comparing with conventional solar still and it should be increase during the summer season. It was also found that the thermal efficiencies of (44.45% ) and (26.59% ) for basin and wick solar still respectively.
It is recommended that:
1- use solar stillwith kind wick compeard basin solar still.
2- Use basin solar still at water depth 1 cm .
