Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe some of the conversational analysis tools in talk shows. One of the most important claims of this study is that TV talk show is different from everyday interactions: it has special turn-taking organization. Since the 1960s, there has been in-depth research on conversation analysis. Recently, there has appeared series of political TV talk show programs broadcasting in English and Arabic. This thesis elaborates on the technique of turn-taking between hosts and guests, as well as other conversational tools such as politeness strategies used by the speakers in an attempt to persuade the audience of their political agendas via the language they use.
The purpose of this research is to analyze some English and Arabic political interviews, especially in talk shows where a selection of talks were carried out by Egyptian politicians and activists after the 25th revolution. Video-data from Arabic and English talk shows are used. This study focuses on analyzing the Arabic talk shows episodes represented in the episode of Ahmed Shafik and Alaa Al Aswany on ON TV channel with two other guests Hamdi Qandil and Naguib Saweeras with two hosts, and the episode of Mostafa El Feky with Khaled Salah on El Nahar TV.
For English, this study sheds light on the episodes hosting Egyptian activists and politicians who were interviewed in English talk shows, more precisely Wael Ghonim being interviewed with David Gergen in Harvard University broadcasted and sponsored by the Instsitute of Politics, and the second English talk show broadcasted by Quadriga is mainly between the host; Ali Aslan and three guests (Hamd Abd El Samad, Ahmed Badawy, and Yung Khulmann).
The analysis of the talk show data takes place within the theoretical frame work of Conversation analysis (CA). CA theory was pioneered by Harvey Sacks and deals with the systematic analysis of talk-in-interaction. The analysis of this thesis outlines some of the conversational analysis tools such as turn-taking, adjacency pairs, hedging, backchanneling, repair, politeness strategies, and honorifics used in talk shows.
