Abstract

The intensive care unit is an emotional charged and highly stressful place. Sources of stress to caregivers in the pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) are many including noises from monitors, alarms of machines, staff noises, bright lights, frequent invasive procedures and deterioration of their child or other children in the unit. The PICU serves as the highest level of acute care available for the most critically ill and injured children who are facing life-threatening circumstances. The Aim of the study is to: assess needs of parents having children in PICU. Research design: Descriptive study was utilized in conducting the study. Setting: The study was conduct in PICU at Children hospital affiliated to Ain Shams University Hospitals. Sample: A purposive sample that composed of 60 critical ill children admitted to PICU. The inclusive criteria was all available children in PICU and their parents, regardless their sex and age. Total children parents 58mothers and17 fathers out of them 15 mothers and father. Study Tool: The tool used for data collection consisted of an interviewing questionnaire sheet. it was designed by the researcher to assess needs of parents having children in PICU. It was written in simple Arabic language to suit level of understanding of children parents. Study result: Revealed that -more than three quarter of the studied children had acute etiology, while less than half of them had medium health status& more than half were they fully aware -causes of all parent stressors were related factors namely, social, psychological, environmental & child factors. -the majority of the studied sample were satisfactory related to child factor, PICU factor, psychological factor & social factor respectively. Conclusion: The current study concluded that, the parent‘s needs were psychological, social (personal), and need for medical information. There was no statistically significant between demographic data and total needs of parents regarding their children in PICU. Recommendation: parent need to have up to date information about condition of their ill children in PICU, and needed support from medical staff throw good communication.
