Abstract

The effect of applying variable inlet guide vanes (VIGVs) in an axial compressor as anti-surge device is investigated. The study considers a blower as a low pressure ratio compressor. The mean streamline approximation concept is used to design the inlet guide vanes. The range of stagger angle variation is calculated based on the relative flow angle variation at mean line due to rotational speed variation from maximum to minimum. The performance prediction at different rotational speeds (2800r.p.m, 2400r.p.m, 2000r.p.m, 1500r.p.m) is done using CFD, ANSYS 16.2. The difference between calculated and measured blower performance lies between (1%~6%) which verifies the CFD model. Present CFD model is used to evaluate the blower performance numerically (with I.G.V). The VIGV is designed and fabricated, where its design is used in the CFD solution in blower performance at specific stagger angle equals 63º. Comparison and evaluation of surge margin for the blower with and without IGVs are done. As result the surge margin increase at design speed by 15%, while the increment at minimum speed reaches 25%.
