Abstract

Learning experience of pediatric oncology nursing is one of the most important parts of students’ educational preparation. It prepares nursing students to use their critical thinking skills for problem solving. Clinical practice provides opportunities for nursing students to learn basic knowledge, skills and attitudes of nursing in clinical setting. The learning environment influences the individuals’ self-efficacy, for students to feel competent and confident in their abilities. Nurse educators must be good facilitators, motivators and role model for the students (Hunt, 2013)
Aim of the study:
The study aimed to evaluate the learning experience of pediatric oncology nursing at Embaba Technical Institute of Health.
Setting:
The study was conducted at Embaba Technical Institute of Health, pediatric training clinical areas of pediatric oncology nursing namely; National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Nasser Institute hospital.
Subjects:
All nursing students of oncology department who were enrolled in the academic year 2015-2016 in the first and second academic year in the previous mentioned settings, also internship students (n=170) in addition to nursing and non-nursing teachers (n=30) were included in the study.
Data collection tools:
Tool I- Evaluation scale by Saarikoski, (2008) adapted from “The Clinical Learning Environment, Supervision and Nurse Teacher (CLES+T)” (Appendix, II) to assess the clinical learning environment, the supervisory relationship and the role of teachers.
Tool II- A structured Questionnaire (Appendix, III) was developed by the researcher to evaluate pediatric oncology nursing learning experience at Embaba Technical Institute of Health in terms of theory and practice, teaching hours settings of training and it included data about:
1- Characteristics of the studied students such as: age, gender, education, housing condition, residence, training setting, reasons of enrollment at Embaba Technical Institute of Health, and this tool also included data about the characteristics of the studied teachers such as: age, qualifications, years of experience, job title and previous scientific training.
2- Suitability of learning environment, theoretical and practical teaching methods and evaluation process.
3- The acquired nursing of skills of the studied students’’ pediatric oncology nursing practice that include; pediatric surgery unit, pediatric medicine unit, outpatient clinics, intensive care unit, emergency room and causality, day case of chemotherapy unit, pain management unit, Blood lab.
Scoring system:
Regarding evaluation of learning experience of pediatric oncology nursing each item is scored into 1 if was answered with yes and zero if was answered with no.
Tool III -Attitude Likert Type Rating Scale: (Appendix, IV).
This tool was developed by the researcher to assess the attitude of the students towards their learning experience in pediatric oncology nursing.
Tool IV - Summative evaluation sheet (Appendix, V)
This tool was used to evaluate the students’ achievement scores in their learning experience of nursing and non-nursing courses according to the policies of the Egyptian Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Higher Education.
Operational design:
The operational design of the study entails three main phases: preparatory phase, pilot of the study and field of the work.
-Preparatory phase:
A review of past and current, local and international related literature using Journals, magazines, scientific periodicals, books, and online references was done to develop the study tools and to get acquainted with the various aspects of the research questions.
-Pilot study:
A pilot study was carried out involving 10% of the expected total study sample. The result of the data obtained from the pilot study used to test the clarity and feasibility of the study tools. The entire sample involved in the pilot study was included to the study sample.
-Field work:
The actual field work was carried out during the academic year 2015-2016. The researcher was available in the study setting, 4 days/week by rotation (from Saturday to Tuesday) from 9 Am to 2 Pm.
Results:
Findings of the current study can be summarized as the following:
 The mean age of the studied students was 17.35 Regarding to the studied student’s gender it was found that 27% of them were males and 73% were females.
 67.6% of the studied students were from urban areas. In addition to about two thirds (65.9%) of them were living with their families.
 73.5% of the studied students had a good level regarding to total learning experience of pediatric oncology nursing at Embaba Technical Institute of Health.
 82.2% of the studied students had a good level regarding to total nursing learning experience at the clinical training setting.
 91% of the studied students were satisfied with the total acquire nursing skills of pediatric oncology nursing.
 Highly statistically significant differences between the studied students academic study year, and their total acquired nursing skills of pediatric oncology nursing learning experience X2= 54.24, p < 0. 01.
 Highly statistically significance differences between the students’ reason of enrollment at Embaba technical institute of health their total attitude regarding to pediatric oncology nursing learning experience X2= 11.34, p= 0.003.
Conclusion:
The study concluded that the learning experience of pediatric oncology nursing at Embaba Technical Institute of Health was satisfactory.
Recommendations:
In the light of study findings, it can be suggested that: The nursing learning experience at Embaba Technical Institute of Health should be planned to meet the actual educational needs of the nursing students. Peer and self-evaluation should be an integral component of learning experiences of pediatric oncology nursing at Embaba Technical Institute of Health. Encouraging and updating strategies for teaching and learning at Embaba Technical Institute of Health.
