Abstract

Image of junior undergraduates’ nurse students are important because they offer strategic clues towards successful recruitment of the next generation of nurses (Luchesi et al., 2009) lack of perception of the reality of nursing as a profession by the public is a common phenomenon that contributes to a negative image of nursing. Since the public image of nurses and nursing can have a critical effect on whether nursing is chosen as a career as well as the effective functioning of nurses in a wide array of situations.
The importance of reinforcing nurses’ positive image is focused in order to sustain their job performance and cope with the potential pressure from the public’s high expectations of nursing care. It follows that whatever improves and enhances the public image of nurses and nursing should be embraced and completely utilized (Luchesi et al., 2009).
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between perception of junior nurse students and nurse interns regarding public image of nursing and Comparing between perceptions of public image of nursing between junior nurse students and nurse interns. This study was carried out at two different settings, the first setting was; one educational department and affiliated to faculty of nursing, Ain Shams University, where junior nursing students having their courses. This include Medical Surgical Nursing Department (1). The second setting was Ain Shams University Hospitals, where the nurse interns are having their training and included the following hospitals: Ain Shams University Hospital, El-Demerdash Hospital, Pediatric Hospital, and the academic institution of cardiac surgery.
The subjects of this study included two groups namely; nursing students group and nurse interns group.
The first group was eighty four (84) junior nurse students out of (184) students from the first academic year of nursing students were included in the study sample.

The second group was ninety four (94) interns, distributed in the aforementioned settings as follows: Ain Shams University Hospital: (30), El- demerdash Hospital: (24), Pediatric Hospital: (20), the academic institution of cardiac surgery: (20) nurse interns.
The data for this study were collected by using a self -administered sheet which based on Perceptions of Professional Nursing questionnaire: One tool will be used to collect data to carry out this study:1-Perceptions of Professional Nursing Tool (PPNT) to investigate the relationship between perception of junior nurse students and nurse interns regarding public image of nursing.
¬¬The main study findings revealed the following:
* As regard to age (100 %) of the junior nurse students had age (≤20) and (100 %) of nurse interns had age (˃20).). Nearly two-thirds (64.3%) of junior nurse students them were female and (81.9%) of nurse interns were females, While in relation to marital status the majority of both studied subject groups. (59.5%) of junior nurse students them and more than half (53.2%) of nurse interns had a relative of friend in the nursing profession .the majority of both studied subject groups had a positive family reaction about their enrollment to the nursing profession.
*The junior nurse students group has statistically higher mean score compared to Nurse interns regarding public image subscale and total perception scale.
*There was a highly statistically significant difference between junior nurse students & nurse interns agreement upon the public image subscale, value subscale, practice subscale (P < 0.01).
*There was a statistically significant difference between junior nurse students & nurse interns agreement upon all studied subscales, (P < 0.05).
* There was a highly statistically significant relation between junior nurse Students gender and practice subscale and their perception of public image total scale (P < 0.02).
*There was a highly statistically significant relation between nurse interns gender and value subscale (P < 0.02).
Based on the study findings, it was recommended that Conducting conference to appropriate orientation for junior undergraduates’ nurse students& nurse interns about the nursing profession, history of nursing, nursing education programs and different clinical experiences, Regular visits to Nursing schools and faculties & places which provide any related nursing programs for provision talks to strengthen the good image to attract more individuals, Ensure that the nursing schools and faculties, the media and professional journals emphasize nursing roles and portray positive image of nursing career to recruit more staff to join nursing. Encourage future studies in order to provide a complete picture of nursing image and factors influencing it. Promoting and sustaining positive nursing image to keep nurses to be motivated to work and retain in the profession to be more professional and be a role model.
