Abstract

In most of Cancer Patients; the diagnosis is reached in advanced stages of the disease, unfortunately many people suffer from the start.
The role of Palliative Care arises most to patients who were diagnosed in advanced stages as it gives them hope to improve the quality of their lives and to live without suffering neither from the disease nor from the plan of treatment.
Also patients who are early diagnosed well benefit much from Palliative Care, as it will provide them with all kinds of support along their journey with the treatment whether it is chemotherapy or radiotherapy or both or hormonal treatment.
There is no doubt that Pain is the most complex problem that faces cancer patients. Living a pain-free life is one of the aims of Palliative care.
Other than Pain; cancer patients may suffer from other symptoms at any stage of their disease that keep them away from their normal activities and lives such as: weight loss, anorexia, cachexia, insomnia, nausea, vomiting depression and loss of concentration etc. Palliative Care with its wide meaning deals with all patients’ sufferings.
Palliative Care Team doesn’t only include oncologists or radiotherapists; it also includes physicians, residents, interns, nurses, social workers, nutritionists and dieticians, pharmacists and physical therapists.
In developing countries like Egypt; oncologists and radiotherapists deal more with patients complaints due to lack of awareness and shortage of well qualified nursing staff and volunteers.
But we are on the way; it becomes a great challenge to develop hospice systems including more education and training to all staff members in oncology units throughout Egypt.
