Abstract

The aim of the study was to enhance nurses’ performance caring for neonates suffering from meconium aspiration. Research Design: A quasi experimental study was utilized for conducting the study. Settings: The study was carried out, at the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) in Nasr City, Atfal Masr, 6 October, Mokattam and El Nile hospitals. Subjects: The study consisted of 50 nurses with different categories selected out of 100 nurses working in the previously mentioned settings and 150 neonates. Tools and data collection: A questionnaire formats and observation checklists, designed by the researcher under the supervision of the supervisors, were the study tools used for collecting data to assess nurses’ knowledge, and practices. The researcher collected the required data before implementation of the guidelines, immediately after and at follow-up. Results: The study revealed that there was statistical significant difference in nurse’s performance at pre and post implementation of the instructional guidelines regarding care of neonates having meconium aspiration. More than half of nurses improved in their knowledge immediately after implementation of the guidelines, while only less than half of them still improved at follow-up. In addition, majority of nurses were competent in their practices immediately after implementation of the guidelines, while about three quarter of them still improved at follow-up. Conclusion: The study concluded that, the instructional guidelines played an important role in enhancing nurses’ performance in caring for neonates suffering from meconium aspiration. Recommendations: The study recommended that, establishing continuous instructional guidelines for nurses, nurse’s development and updating nurses with the national and international standards for caring of neonates suffering from meconium aspiration. Further studies need to be carried out in order to assess the effectiveness of the instructional guidelines’ applications in the care of neonates suffering from meconium aspiration.
