Abstract

Summary
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common
endocrinopathies. chronic infections may increase the risk of infertility.
Helicobacter pylori infection has been found to be associated with infertility,
and PCOS is also one of the most common causes of infertility.
To the best of our knowledge, the possible association between H. pylori
seropositivity and PCOS has been descriped in the results from a previous
study performed in Turkey which showed that about 40% of PCOS cases
had positive helicobacter while only 22% of controls had positive
helicobacter (Yavasoglu et al., 2009). But yet it has never been investigated
in Egypt. So a cross-sectional study was performed in the current work to
find if there is an association between Helicobacter Pylori infection and
occurrence of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. The procedure was carried out in
Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital at outpatient clinic between a
group of 47 PCOS women (mean age, 25.468 ±2.586 years), and an agematched
group of controls (47 women; mean age, 25.553 ±2.195 years). The
IgG-type antibodies to H. pylori was detected in serum, to aid in the
diagnosis of H. pylori infection. H. pylori seropositivity was found to be
significantly higher in the PCOS group (PCOS 68.1%; control 25.5%; P =
0.001). So a possible association between H. pylori seropositivity and PCOS
is suggested. It is early to state that H. pylori is a new etiological factor for
PCOS or the association of PCOS and H. pylori infection is coincidental
with these data. Further studies evaluating more subjects are required.
