Abstract

Introduction: Nocturnal enuresis is the most common childhood urologic complaint and one of the most common pediatric-health issues.[ Nocturnal enuresis is frequently associated with a family history of the condition. Most girls can stay dry by age six and most boys stay dry by age seven. By ten years old, 95% of children are dry at night
This De Novo study aimed to study the knowledge, attitude and practice of the family physicians, working at in the family practice centers – Suez Canal University, towards nocturnal enuresis in children.
physicians and methods: It is a descriptive cross sectional study. Our target population were all the family physicians under training in (Diploma, master and Doctorate degree) working in family practice centers affiliated to Suez Canal university hospital . 50 physicians attended the evaluation setting (28 urban and 22 rural physicians). The evaluation format was of two groups of questions. The first group was designed to investigate physician’s demographic data. The second group included multiple choices and two written problems used to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practice. 60% was the cut of point to pass the evaluation for knowledge, attitude and practice . Epi-Info statistical package was used for data entry and statistical analysis.
Results : It was found that 82% of the participants had poor knowledge, 88% of the participants had favorable results as regards to attitude assessment while 54% of the participants had unsatisfactory results as regards to practice assessment of enuresis.
The total score of knowledge was highest among more than 30 years old, female, non qualified and urban & with more than 5 years of experience.
Eighty two percent of the participants needed more knowledge regarding their competency in enuresis management, majority of them were urban physicians.
The most common source of information for the participants was the postgraduate knowledge.
The total score of attitude was highest among more than 30 years old, female, non qualified and urban physicians with more than 5 years of experience.
The most recommended way to improve enuresis practice by non qualified physician was to provide standardized guideline, while the most recommended by qualified physicians was to provide standardized guidelines and training courses.
The highest score of practice was most unsatisfactory among more than 30 years, female, non qualified, urban physicians with less than 5 years of experience.
Conclusion : this study addresses areas of improvement that might be a stimulus to design a tailored educational interventions in order to improve the family physician’s knowledge, attitude and practice of enuresis.
