Abstract

Armor steel Armox SOOTplates were successfully welded using
three welding processes Manual metal arc with E307 austenitic
stainless steel electrode, Metal inert gas with ER307 filler wire,
and Tungsten inert gas with strips from the Armox SOOTplate.
Non destructive tests were carried out on the produced joints like
dye penetrant and radiographic tests. Austenitic stainless steel
microstructure with different grains size was obtained from MMA
and MIG welding processes, while TIG weld zone showed
microstructure containing martensite, and upper bainite. The HAZ
revealed over-tempered martensitic structure. MMA welding
process achieved the highest values of impact energy at root and
face due to the austenite St. St. microstructure, while TIG welding
process gave the smallest impact energy at HAZ due to overtempered
martensite structure. TIG welding process achieved the
highest tensile strength of 1050 MPa, due to the martensite
structure, then MMA 870 MPa and MIG 772 MPa due to austenite ~.
St. St. structure. MMA welding process reach the smallest bending
angle of 1150 before cracking under cracking load of 33 KN, MIG
reached bending angle of 1300 under cracking load of about 27
KN, while in case of TIG welding process cracking occurred at
biggest angle of 1500 under the highest cracking load of about 38
KN. Most of the microhardness measurements showed symmetric
trends around the welding zone center for MMA, MIG and TIG
weldingprocess. MIG weldment recorded microhardness value of
200 HV at weld zone, while MMA gave 250 HV at weld zone due
to austenite St. St. structure, while TIG weldment achieved 300
HV at weld zone due to the microstructure containing martensite
and upper bainite.
