Cutaneous melanoma (CM) is a malignant tumor that is less common than the familiar basal and squamous cell tumors of the skin, but is much more fatal. In Europe, it is the 17th most commonly diagnosed cancer in males and eighth most common in females (Ferlay et al., 2000). In Egypt it comprises about 5.14% of the whole malignant skin tumors (Mokhtar et al., 2007)The aim of the present work is to update knowledge regarding the pathogenesis of melanoma by studying its molecular biology, genetic alterations and its predisposing factors .A review of the most recent classification, grading and staging systems, the gross and microscopic features and differential diagnosis is carried out. New trends in diagnosis and management are reviewed.
