Abstract This thesis is concerned with the use of cement, as a rather cheap and available material, to reduce the width of the new roads and decrease land expropriation. Traditionally cement used to improve the soil properties by mixing with soil. A new technique of using cement to improve soil properties by pulverization not by mixing is existed. An experimental programme was carried out using the triaxial apparatus to investigate the effect of cement layers, dry and wet, on the stress strain behavior and shear strength. The parameters considered in the test included the cement content, cement feature, water / cement ratio, and time. The presence of cement, as layers having vertical spacing of 25 cm compacted sand, improves the stress-strain properties than that of the sand alone in all cases. Also, model-footing tests were conducted on the soil with dry and wet cement to study the effect of using cement layers on the compressibility and bearing capacity of the sand. The studied parameters were cement content and cement feature. Cement layers have a significantly improving of the load-settlement properties and increasing the bearing capacity of sand. Factor of safety against sliding was checked and wet cement was much pronounced at improving the factor of safety against sliding than dry cement. |
