Abstract

Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris, L.) is an important crop not only in Egypt, but also all over the world as a source of sugar production. The Egyptian government imports large amounts of sugar every year to face the demand of rapid increase of population from sugar. A strategic decision has been taken to expand the cultivated area with sugar beet in the newly reclaimed soils and increase sugar yield per unit area as an attempt to narrow the gab between production and consumption in Egypt. Land and irrigation water are two limiting factors to cultivate this crop. Thus, it is favorable to choose a crop of low water consumption and of short season. Sugar beet is preferable to satisfy these requirements more than sugar cane.
Nowadays, world face a great problem either in the human health or in environmental pollution, this problem is more related to the excessive use of mineral or chemical fertilizers, especially those of nitrogenous ones. Nitrogen is the essential element for yield and quality of sugar beet the short supply causes a drastic reduction in root and sugar yields. In addition , the over use of it decreases both sugar percentage and juice quality. However , Biofertilization is a new source of nitrogenous fertilizer which reduce the high rates of mineral fertilizers, the cost of production and environmental pollution.
