Abstract

Aim of the study was to assess needs and problems of terminally ill children, and role of the nurse toward care of terminally ill children. The study was conducted at the intensive care unites in both Mansoura University Children’s and El Nour children’s Hospitals at Mansoura city. The study comprised all the available nurses (110 nurse), and the same number of terminally ill children. A predesigned questionnaire to assess needs and problems of TIC as well as role of the nurse toward care given to them, observational checklist to assess nurses’ actual performance about caring for TIC, Likert type rating scale to assess nurses’ attitude toward care of TIC and Taylor’s manifest anxiety scale to assess level of anxiety of nurses caring for terminally ill children. Main results of the study revealed that almost one third of the studied nurses had poor knowledge about terminal illness in children, two thirds had poor knowledge about communication with TIC, 64.5% had good knowledge regarding their role in meeting needs and solving the problems of TIC, the majority had a satisfactory performance when caring for TIC, 85.4% had a moderate level of anxiety due to care of TIC and 92.7% had positive attitude toward care of terminally ill children. The study recommended that an in-service training educational program concerning care of TIC should be provided for nursing staff working in pediatric intensive care units to improve their knowledge and performance regarding care of terminally ill children
