Abstract

Wastewater treatment is becoming an increasingly necessary practice. The increasing volumes of wastewater and stricter regulations frequently put into practice cause a continuous increase in volumes of the sludge generated in wastewater treatment works. The highly compressible nature of sludge and the presence of colloidal particles cause difficulties in sludge dewatering. Reducing the moisture content in sludge is a key factor in reducing wastewater management’s capital, operational, and transportation costs. This is why continuous research is being carried out to look for improvements in these areas.
The characteristics of sludge before conditioning, the properties and amount of chemical aid, and the dewatering equipment used are the most important parameters to reach desired dry solid content.
In this study, the sludge samples were taken from Sarabium WWTP, with a moisture content of 97%, pH range of 6.92-7.2, TS range of 29200-30150 mg/L, and SRF 9.15463E+15 m/kg. Flows from a dredger’s pipelines connecting the facultative lagoon and the drying bed were used for the samples. The treatment system in the Sarabium plant is based on biological treatment technology using aeration ponds, so it is considered a model for secondary treatment systems.
