Abstract

Decubitus ulcer is defined as localized damage of the skin and underlying soft tissue usually over a bony prominence area. It may be related to a medical or other device. The damage can present as intact skin or an open ulcer and may be painful. The damage occurs as a result of intense or prolonged pressure or pressure in combination with shear. The tolerance of soft tissue for pressure and shear may also be affected by nutrition, perfusion, co-morbidities and condition of the soft tissue.(Children with chronic conditions, psychomotor deficits, neurological disorders or spinal cord injuries who admitted to critical care unit are the groups at higher risk and with a higher incidence of DUs. In critically-ill children, the incidence of DUs has been reported to range from 18% to 27%.Prevention of decubitus ulcer can be achieved by training of health care professionals is considered as an integral part of the prevention of decubitus ulcers. The aim of the training is to reduce the frequency of decubitus ulcers by changing behaviour pattern. It has emphasized that providing training in different formats such as didactic and video-based education in the classroom environment increases the knowledge level of health professionals on the prevention of decubitus ulcers.
