Abstract

Vitiligo is a depigmenting skin disorder that is classified as an autoimmune disease, associated with genetic and environmental factors together with metabolic, oxidative stress, and cell detachment abnormalities. Alopecia areata is a non-scarring, autoimmune hair loss disorder. It often has a sudden onset and may be acute, recurrent, or chronic. AA is a T-cellmediated inflammatory disorder specific to the hair follicle. Clinical presentation varies considerably, but a well-defined, circumscribed patch is most common initially Granulysin is a cytolytic protein produced by activated human CTL and NK cells. It regulates apoptosis in several cell types. Granulysin is strictly related to the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis, and it can target several human cells, enhancing inflammatory, and autoimmune processes. This study aimed to evaluate the serum levels of granulysin in patients with vitiligo and its correlation with disease severity. Patients and methods our study included 80 subjects classified as: o 25 patients with active vitiligo o 25 patients with stable vitiligo o 15 healthy control subjects matching the age and sex as vitiligo patients. o 15 patients with active alopecia areata as a positive control matching the age and sex as vitiligo patients. All studied individuals were subjected to complete history taking and complete general and dermatological clinical examination.
