Abstract

Background: Thyroid disorders can be categorized according to the function (hyper and hypothyroid) and etiology (autoimmune, neoplastic, and nutritional). Radioactive iodine (RAI) can be used for the treatment of overactive thyroid and certain types of thyroid cancer. Biopsychosocial assessment and management of health needs for patients with thyroid disorders undergoing RAI therapy should be done routinely. Aim of the study: To assess the biopsychosocial needs for patients’ receiving radioactive iodine therapy for thyroid disorders. Research design: A descriptive exploratory research design was utilized for the conduction of this study. Setting: This study was conducted in outpatient clinic in Nuclear Medicine Center for receiving radioactive iodine therapy affiliated to Ain Shams University Hospital. Subjes: Convenient sample of 40 adult patients with thyroid disorders from both sexes. Tools for data collection: it was uses two tools for data collection: Tool I: Patients interviewing questionnaire: It includes the following three parts: Part I: patients’ Socio-demographic characteristics. Part II: Patients’ Medical Data. Part III: Patients’ knowledge about the radioactive iodine: Tool II: Biopsychosocial assessment needs: It includes the following: 1-Barthel Index activity of daily living. 2-Psychological needs: depression, anxiety and stress scale. 3- Social needs: Social dysfunction rating scale. Results: 52.5% of the studied patients had satisfactory level of knowledge regarding receiving radioactive iodine therapy, 62.5% of the studied patients had low level of total physical needs among patients receiving radioactive iodine, 65% of the studied patients had highly psychological needs, 42.5% of them had high needs of social needs. Conclusion: two fifths of the studied patients had high level of total needs about physical, psychological and social needs among patients receiving radioactive iodine. Recommendation: conduct instructional guidelines to all patients undergoing radioactive iodine therapy for thyroid to improve their knowledge and quality of life.
