Abstract

The African market represents an enormous absorptive capacity with the expansion of the continent, the increase in its population, and the diversity of consumer tastes and incomes. Thus, considering the regional and spatial connection, Africa is presumed to be one of the primary destinations for Egyptian exports. However, the relative importance of Egyptian exports to African countries represented only an average of 10.98% of total exports. Furthermore, Arab African countries received an average of 68% of total Egyptian exports to Africa. Thus, The main objective of this study is to investigate the determinants of Egyptian exports to African countries. As the gravity model has been extensively used in examining the determinants of trade flows as well as the effects of various policies on trade flows, the model has been followed in order to achieve the main objective of the study. The model was estimated for a balanced panel data set consisting of forty-one African countries during the period ranging from 2000 to 2018. the study employed various estimation methods, but the PPML was used as the benchmark method. The results demonstrated that Egypt’s GDP, African countries’ GDP, and exchange rate have had a positive and highly statistically significant impact on Egypt’s exports to African countries. Furthermore, the dummies for official common language and COMESA agreements have also had a positive and highly statistically significant impact, demonstrating that the cultural factor and the existence of trade agreements contribute greatly to the increase of Egyptian exports to African countries. On the other hand, geographical distance and being the importing country landlocked have had a negative and highly statistically significant impact on Egypt’s exports to African countries. Based on the aforementioned, in order to increase Egyptian exports to African countries, the Egyptian export structure must be more diversified to become more complementarity with that of African countries imports, in addition to minimizing tariff and non-tariff measures to reduces the cost of access to African markets through trade agreements and investment in transportation infrastructure.
