Abstract

This study examined the effect of media literacy education on university students’ ability to identify online misinformation on social media platforms using their data verification skills. The ”Matching Posttest-Only Control group Design”, as one of the quasi-experimental designs, was selected to study the effect of this learning process on a purposive sample made up of (215) respondents of sophomore female students in the ”Faculty of Mass Communication” at Cairo University. This sample is divided into an experimental group and a control group to compare the level of verification skills among those who studied media literacy and those who didn’t study media literacy. The findings of the comparative analysis revealed that students in the experimental group were more able to verify online information that they get from social media platforms using various verification techniques than students in the control group, which emphasizes the positive correlation between media literacy learning and students’ data verification skills.
