Abstract

Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the skin, mucous membranes and appendages. Although its pathogenesis is still unclear, some studies showed that autoreactive cytotoxic T lymphocytes are the effector cells which cause degeneration and destruction of keratinocytes. Osteopontin (OPN) is expressed during inflammation by natural killer cells, activated T cells and macrophages and classified as a T-helper type 1 (Th1) cytokine. Plasma OPN has been reported to be a potential clinical marker for prediction of atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the plasma and tissue levels of OPN and plasma selenium levels in patients with LP, to determine their possible role in its pathogenesis and their relation to the metabolic status in patients and to identify a possible link between these markers and co-morbidities observed. The levels of plasma and tissue OPN were measured in LP patients and in the control by ELISA technique from 30 patients with LP as well as from 30 age and sex matched controls. Metabolic syndrome parameters were also was assessed in both groups
