Abstract

Aim of the Study: The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the influence of artifacts produced by metallic dental materials on Multi-slice and Cone Beam Computed Tomography Obtained {u2013}Images. Materials and methods: This study was designed to test the effect and influence of artifacts produced by some metallic dental materials on CT and CBCT images. The tested materials were divided into two main groups; dental implants (Implant Group), and dental restorations (Restoration Groups). The later was further sub-divided into; amalgam restorations (Restoration Groups A and B), full coverage crown (Restoration group C) and metallic inlays (Restoration group D). Results: The results of this study revealed that there was no statistical significant difference between MSCT and CBCT in cupping artifact production from implant, despite this insignificance, yet, CBCT showed much more cupping artifacts around the implants. On the contrary, CBCT differed significantly from CT in streak artifacts from metallic coronal restorations; CBCT showed the least artifacts. Conclusion: 1. MSCT produced less streak artifacts than CBCT from the implants. 2. CBCT produced more cupping artifacts than MSCT especially at the inter-proximal area; area between implants.3. Metallic restorations produced a significantly larger amount of streak artifacts when scanned by MSCT than by CBCT.4. The PFM crown produces the largest amount of streak artifacts followed by MOD amalgam, MO amalgam, and inlay respectively
