Abstract

”Healthy Homes” is a century-old concept that promotes safe, pleasant, and sanitary housing as a means for preventing diseases. Throughout history, pandemics were one of the major factors that affected people’s lifestyle and houses’ designs.
Recently, people all over the world are facing a global health crisis caused by Corona virus , known as COVID -19, since December 2019 , have been the deadly pandemic that led to a need for a lockdown , isolation , and social distancing , which raised the concerns about to provide a better indoor life quality. As a result, the residential spaces have taken on new significances in terms of pandemic control and as places where residents spend (80-90) % of their time. Even after this pandemic, as the future epidemics are unknown, and the surrounding environment is unpredictable, it is necessary to create healthy living conditions with comfortable and adaptable interior environment , which is able to deal with the occupants’ well-being, through the implementation of deducted architectural guidelines and strategies in this research to design healthy homes, enhance the indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and improve the quality of living spaces for better life.
The main aim of this thesis is to highlight how to design a healthy home that ensure occupants’ health and promote their comfort and well-being. Different architectural approaches and added sustainable layers may increase the health of the (IEQ) by implementing some strategies and guidelines looking step forward advanced technology. Different analyses were made to be able to define and precise what are the most effective parameters affecting the efficiency of the residential spaces. The results indicated that there are three main pillars creating a healthy home. The first one is the parameters affecting the human health such as (indoor air quality, space cleanness…etc.), the second one the parameters affecting the human well-being which are related to different features; environmental, physical, social and mental, and finally the human comfort affected by the thermal, acoustic and visual comfort inside the indoor environment. In addition to technology that promote the smart healthy living.
This thesis is divided into six main chapters and follow a logical progression of the research phases. First, the introduction presenting the academic framework, which includes the research observation, problem, the main questions related to the objectives of the thesis, the main structure and methodology of the current work. The next chapter presents the basic principles of healthy housing living which includes both theoretical investigations and reference studies, starting with the main urban and architectural approaches for healthy homes then explaining both the internal and external factors affecting the indoor environmental quality (IEQ). Chapter 3 sheds the light on the use of advanced technologies inside the house for smart living and comfortable interacting (IEQ). Chapter 4 investigates the standards that should be followed to create a healthy home, compares between different international and local rating systems and selects some guidelines from the Egyptian building codes to create an efficient healthy home. Chapter 5 starts with an analytic tool deduced from the investigations in the previous chapters. This tool is used to assess and analyze the selected case studies from different cities all over the word but with the same climate zone as Cairo, and deduce the principles and applications of theses case studies. Finally, Chapter 6 includes the literature and empirical conclusions concerning the strategies and principles that should be taken into consideration for healthy high-end housing living that promote the occupants’ health, well-being and comfort. Then some recommendations for government, organizations and individuals were given and some future works were suggested for future researches and papers.
