Abstract

Purpose: This study was designed to determine The effect of early mobilization in improving pulmonary functions in individuals who had elective open upper abdominal surgery (UAS). Methods : Forty patients of both sexes (31 males and 9 females) who underwent elective open upper abdominal surgery were selected from general surgery department Kasr El-Ainy hospital in the duration from January 2016 to June 2016 .Their age ranged from 45-65 years. They were randomly assigned into two groups, twenty in each group. group I received early mobilization and routine chest physiotherapy (deep breathing exercises and splinted coughing); and group II received only routine chest physiotherapy. Patients in both groups underwent two sessions of physical therapy for the first two post-operative days and once per day on the third and up to the tenth postoperative day. All of them underwent evaluation of pulmonary functions: Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second (FEV1) and Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) before treatment application and after ten days postoperatively. Results: the results showed that there was a significant improvement of pulmonary functions (FVC, FEV1 and PEF) in both groups but the improvement was greater when compared to the control group. Conclusions: Early mobilization is effective in improving pulmonary functions after elective open UAS
