Abstract

This study was performed to evaluate the effect of laser surface treatment of implants on bone changes in implant retained overdentures through radiographic assessment.
Seven patients were selected from the outpatient clinic of Oral and Maxillofacial Prosthodontic Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Ain Shams University.
Patients were allocated into single group with each patient receiving two implants:
group A: received Laser-Lok implants on one side.
group B: received resorbable blast texturing surface treated implants on the other side.
CBCT and Mimics 20.0 software were used to evaluate the density of the peri-implant bone formation in terms of gray scale levels, and crestal bone loss at zero, 6 month and 12 months follow up periods. Results were recorded, collected, tabulated and statistically analyzed.
Results showed that there is statistically significant difference in the bone density changes (Grey scale value) and crestal bone loss in favor of the Laser-Lok side when compared to the conventional side.
Within the limitations of this study and from the obtained data the following was concluded:
The Laser-Lok implant increased the density of bone formed around the implant post-surgically and decreased the rate of both the linear and volumetric bone loss around implant retained overdentures.
While the present study mainly tested the effect of laser-Lok surface treatment of the implant on the surrounding bone changes, further work could be investigated. This could include the use of abutments with Laser-Lok collars, the bone changes surrounding splinted implants and the bone changes with female participants both pre and post menopause. A study with a longer follow-up period could also be carried out to observe the long-term effect of the Laser-Lok surface treatment on the bone density underneath implant-retained overdenture.
