Abstract

DNA barcoding is a valuable tool in molecular identification for plant materials, which mainly is used to ensure the nature and the efficacy of the therapeutic significance of any available medicinal plant. The identification process is vital for medicinal plant illegal trading, safe usage, and avoiding adulteration. In this study, we used DNA barcoding to evaluate the discrimination of some medicinal plants from el Omayed Biosphere Reserve (OBR) and to confirm their identification. Two DNA regions, rbcL and ITS, were chosen for being universal, easy to amplify and sequence, and capable of identifying taxa at generic and specie levels. We found that the ITS region presented a higher discrimination power among species than the rbcL region. It helped identify four out of eight plants more accurately than the rbcL. ITS and rbcL together could be used to contribute plant species identification, conservation, and the trade control of valuable plant resources. GC-MS analysis found that seventy-five active Ingredients were compounds in ten different classes and both Rumex spinosa and Rumex vesicarius were the most plants that contain compounds. We found in soil and Meteorology analysis that these plants could grow in the temperature average (16-33℃) and rainfall average (16.8-12.8mm) in sand soil. We aimed to collect data on the threaten medical plants to the made atlas to conserve
